Behold the opposable thumb!

The thumb is so useful! On both the bow and violin, it counterbalances fingers pressing downward (assisted by balancing provided by the shoulder and chin.) Note "balance" in "counterbalance." Think Newton's 3rd law: If object A exerts a force on object B, object B also exerts an equal and opposite force on object A.
