Inspiration vs Imitation

There is a belief that students are tainted by listening to recordings before they learn a piece. I respectfully disagree. Of course, listening to a piece 100 times to imitate another person serves no one in developing their authentic voice. However, listening to many varied performances can stimulate one's imagination. And that's a good thing.
