Passing a shaking baton

In a relay race, runners try to keep the baton as steady as possible, so it can easily be grabbed by the next runner. Not so when changing vibrating fingers on the fingerboard. To stop vibrating when changing fingers is to stop energy and color of the sound. Make sure that’s really what you want and not just a matter of perceived safety in finding the pitch with a non-vibrating finger.
